Heart Health

You Can Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the US. African American and Hispanic American/Latina women tend to have more risk factors than white women. About 64% of women who die suddenly of coronary heart disease have NO previous symptoms. Even if you don’t have symptoms you may be at risk for heart disease.

Take steps to lower your risk of heart disease:
  • Know your blood pressure
  • Don’t smoke. If you smoke, try to quit.
  • Get screened for diabetes
  • Have your cholesterol checked
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Limit alcohol to mo more than 1 drink a day
  • Find healthy ways to relieve stress
Medical conditions and lifestyle choices that increase your risk for heart disease:
  • Diabetes
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Poor diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Excessive alcohol
Heart disease often has no symptoms but sometimes there are warning signs:
  • Chest pain (sharp, burning)
  • Neck, jaw, throat, abdominal or back pain (usually described by women)
  • Arm pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Abnormal heartbeats

If you think you or someone else may be having a heart attack or stroke do not hesitate! Call 911 immediately.
