Contraception
The Depo–provera shot contains progesterone which prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation and by thickening the mucus at the cervix which blocks the sperm from entering.
The shot is given in the office every 12 weeks. The first shot is given when you start your period. Only about 6 women in 100 get pregnant on the shot.
Use a backup method such as condoms to prevent pregnancy and talk to your provider to find out when to reinitiate the Depo shot.
The birth control patch does NOT protect you from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Use condoms to protect yourself from these infections.
“Dr. Akonye has been amazing to our family. She’s was my doc through all 4 of our pregnancies & I couldn’t have asked for a more down to earth person to walk us through every one of them.” – Priscilla Terrazas
