Contraception
Mirena is an intrauterine contraceptive device that delivers small amounts of hormone directly into the uterus. It prevents pregnancy by preventing sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg, it thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from entering the uterus, and it thins the lining of the uterus. It may also prevent ovulation for some women. It is effective for up to 5 years. Less than 1 in 100 women become pregnant with the Mirena.
The Mirena IUD does NOT protect you from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Use condoms to protect yourself from these infections.
